A New Standard for Racehorse Aftercare:
The Training Passport Proposal

The Gap

While current industry initiatives are making great strides in rehoming, a critical gap remains. The most vulnerable horses are those whose new owners lack the specific, evidence-based tools to manage the off-the-track horse from the first transition to potentially many others in that horse's 20-30-year lifespan. The Training Passport is designed to be the safety net that prevents these horses from entering a cycle of neglect or re-homing.

Ways to Get Involved

Race-2-Ride isn't just for racing authorities. If you love OTT horses, work with them, or simply believe the industry can do better, you're exactly who we want on this journey. Trainers, coaches, vets, breed societies, equestrian media, Pony Club volunteers, riding instructors, and passionate horse owners all have a role to play.

Strategic Alignment & Industry Briefing

The Race-2-Ride Training Passport is a mission-driven initiative to provide a sustainable safety net for the horses and owners most at risk in our industry. I am seeking to brief industry leaders on how we can collaborate to make evidence-based support the national standard for aftercare.

If you would like to discuss the scalability of this project or explore how it aligns with your current OTT initiatives, please schedule a brief introductory call.

About the Founder, Dr Kate Fenner

I bring over three decades of specialised experience in off-track thoroughbred retraining, combined with rigorous academic credentials that bridge the gap between scientific research and practical application. My journey began decades ago with a horse straight from Tommy Smith’s stables that followed me to boarding school, and eventually led to competing at the Rolex International level in Asia. With a PhD in Horse Behaviour and Training and an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Queensland, I have dedicated my career to understanding how horses learn and developing evidence-based training methods that prioritise both safety and welfare.

My published research on horse behaviour, training, and welfare has influenced international equestrian standards. At the same time, my practical work through Kandoo Equine has helped thousands of horse owners successfully train their horses at home. My unique understanding of the challenges facing OTT horses - and their predominantly female owners - stems from decades of hands-on retraining work and systematic research into how racing backgrounds affect learning and behaviour.

The Race-2-Ride Training Passport represents my commitment to solving a critical gap in thoroughbred welfare: ensuring every off-track horse has access to specialised, evidence-based training support throughout their entire post-racing life, regardless of how many times they change hands.

My Legacy Project

Race-2-Ride is the culmination of my life’s work. My mission is to ensure that the most vulnerable horses and their owners, those who often fall through the cracks of existing initiatives, have the evidence-based support they need to stay safe and successful.
